EB1 Green Card Success – Hesam, an Iranian Filmmaker
Securing the American Dream – When Hesam started with us, he had already done his research into his options, but was torn between the O1 visa and the EB1 Green Card. With ties to the US and a job offer in hand, the O1B could have been a great option, but upon review of his case, we saw significant achievement that couldn’t be ignored. On our advice, Hesam chose to go straight to the top and go for an EB1 Green Card, a decision that proved to be the right one as he was approved by US Immigration. Hesam put his heart and soul into the case and kept the faith all along, and ultimately, we were able to make his American Dream come true with an EB1 victory!
Tell me about where you are from and a little bit about what you do.
I’m Hesam, a film director from Iran and I’ve been working in this business for about 20 years.
How did you work your way up the ranks to reach your level and what were some of the challenges along the way?
I followed 3 simple rules in my career:
- Always try to do something new or creative; otherwise, don’t start at all!
- Never repeat the same thing, even if it was a huge success!
- Always assume that your current project is the most important project on the earth!
For a film-maker, usually the biggest challenge is finding someone who’s ready to invest in your crazy ideas! It’s the most difficult part of my job, but if you believe in your idea, everything works out eventually!
Have you ever lived in the US before? If so, under what circumstances? If not, what aroused your interest to move to the US?
No, I have not; but anyone who works in the film business knows that the US is home of the entertainment industry. I wanted to move to a place with more prospects for my career, and where else in the world is better than the US?
How did you decide to pursue an EB1?
I decided to go for an EB1 as soon as I read about its advantages in an online article. It was an ambitious decision and I knew getting it wouldn’t be easy at all; but I also believed that the EB1 was the only thing worth fighting for!
What was your experience with the EB1 petition process?
At first, it looked a little bit scary! I wasn’t sure if I could provide all the necessary evidence for satisfying each category. I had no idea where I should start but Chris and his team broke it down into small easy tasks. They guided me through the whole process and helped me to prepare each single document. After a couple of months, we had all the necessary evidence, maybe more!
What were some of the challenges you had to work on in the preparation of your case, for example, evidence gathering?
Sometimes I had to find evidence from 15 or 20 years ago. It was difficult because the internet wasn’t that popular in those days, and I couldn’t find them by a simple google search (for example, a specific film festival press coverage).
What kind of relationship did/do you have with Chris and his team?
One of the biggest joys of working with Chris and his team was the quality of communication. They were always there to guide me through the process. We had scheduled phone calls and routine emails from the beginning of the journey to the very end. I especially liked the Online Case system through which I could be in touch with the team all the time. I could see my tasks and my progress for each step. This easy-to-use, web-based system was an excellent way for us to constantly be in touch and work together to finalize the case.
What were you doing when you found out you were approved? What was your immediate reaction? How did/will you celebrate?
It was the last day of me and my wife’s spring vacation. We were strolling in a beautiful garden in Isfahan (one of the most visited cities of Iran) and we were about to order some drinks. My cell phone rang and I heard the news. We were shocked and couldn’t believe it for a few minutes! What did we do? We doubled the order and had a small celebration on that memorable afternoon!
What are you looking forward to most about moving to the US?
I am looking forward to participating in world-class film-making projects. I am especially interested in the technical aspects of cinema and the US is the best place for pursuing it.
What will you miss the most about your home country?
I will definitely miss my family and friends, but thanks to technology, at least I can be in touch and even see them online whenever I want!
What advice would you give to any immigrant considering an EB1 or who is already in the process?
Never give up! Be patient! Always follow the instructions provided by Chris and his team carefully and above all, believe in yourself!
