Coronavirus: Quick Travel Ban Update

By Chris M. Ingram, LL.M., ESQ

Back to News Home Page

As of Wednesday morning April 22nd, 2020, the President’s proposed Travel Ban had not yet been fully drafted. The latest news I’ve seen is that the Travel Ban is expected to only last 60-days and will not apply to anyone seeking a temporary work visa and thus only apply to green card applicants. Until the Travel Ban Executive Order has been fully drafted, signed and published, the above is only speculation. We’ll have to wait and see the final draft.

A common practice with this President is to tease out his intentions like a game show host, keeping his audience in suspense. Given the gravity of what a Travel Ban might mean to millions of American families and workers, from the indispensable agricultural workers to top level STEM workers, this game show host approach is immensely distressing, although highly entertaining to the President’s political base.

Needless to say, I’ll be awaiting the final signed Executive Order which may be released later today or later this week, we do not know for sure, but as soon as it is published, I’ll break it down for you and explain who it effects and for how long. Remember, at this time, most, if not all U.S. Consulates are closed to the public due to the Coronavirus and therefore aliens are currently unable to get their approved visas stamped into their passports at this time anyway.

If indeed the travel restrictions only last 60-days this will certainly not be the end of the world, but more like an inconvenience for sure, especially if it does not apply to the temporary work visa holders.

At a time when we already have to deal with the stress of the Coronavirus threatening our very lives world-wide, it would be nice not to have this Travel Ban to deal with also.

I’ll keep you posted.

I wish you all the very best. Please stay safe, stick to social distancing and all the other safety advice out there.

P.S. I have a lot more to write on other topics, I’ll try and get another newsletter out asap.
