Ok – let’s get into some details about the Papa Murphy’s franchise.
About Papa Murphy’s
Papa Murphy’s was started in 1995 by an entrepreneur who purchased two different pizza chains and pioneered the new take-and-bake pizza idea. The concept was that Papa Murphy’s stores would make pizzas for customers to take home and bake themselves.
The business concept is simple. Papa Murphy’s is a community based pizza shop that requires no ovens, no delivery, no dining room and no late hours. There are now over 1,300 Papa Murphy’s franchises in the United States, and the franchisor is seeking new franchise owners throughout the Western and Mid-west regions of the US.
Papa Murphy’s is ranked #32 on the 2015 Entrepreneur.com Franchise 500.
E2 Investment
There are two important considerations for determining whether or not a franchise is a good choice for an E2 investor; 1) does the franchise allow absentee ownership, and 2) will the franchise create enough jobs to qualify with US Immigration?
Papa Murphy’s does not allow absentee ownership, meaning you will be required to work in the store. This is one of the reasons an E2 investor who wants to make an impact on the community should consider this option, because you will be required to regularly interface with customers in the store.
A typical Papa Murphy’s store requires 11-12 employees, this is well in excess of the amount necessary to meet the E2 visa requirements.
Investment Requirements
A typical Papa Murphy’s franchise will require an upfront investment of $264,755 – $446,171.
Net Worth Requirements
For Papa Murphy’s you will need to show a net worth of $275,000.
Note: Net worth is basically the value of your assets minus the value of your debts, and franchisors normally require you to show a certain net worth in order to guarantee that you are going to be successful in the business.
Liquidity Requirements
Liquidity is important because it guarantees the franchisor that you will have cash on hand in an emergency.
For a Papa Murphy’s franchise, you are required to have $80,000 cash on hand.
Note: While a line of credit may be sufficient to meet this requirement, as a new arrival to the US under an E2 visa you may not have immediate access to lines of credit. Make sure you consider this in your overall investment budget.
Training Requirements
You will receive three days of training at a certified training store, one week at the franchise headquarters in Vancouver, WA, and five weeks at your new franchise location. Papa Murphy’s currently offers: extensive field support teams, site selection assistance, comprehensive store design and construction support, management and ongoing training programs, financial analysis, operations evaluation and help with strategic planning, wide-ranging marketing services, including graphic design public relations, social media, local store marketing, and advertising support.
Benefits
Along with extensive training and support, Papa Murphy’s provides a newsletter, meetings, toll-free phone lines, grand opening promotions, internet, security/safety procedures, field operations/evaluations, purchasing cooperatives, co-op advertising, ad slicks, a national media presence, regional advertising, in-house graphics and local store marketing support.
Franchise Fee / Royalty
All franchise owners have to pay a small royalty or commission on the business they generate using the franchise name and business model. In many cases, but not all, you will be required to pay:
- An initial Franchise Fee to become a franchise owner,
- A royalty based on a percentage of the monthly gross of the business; and,
- A franchise fee for any advertising and corporate promotions.
Papa Murphy’s requires a franchise fee of $25,000.
Papa Murphy’s requires you to pay a royalty fee of 5% of weekly net sales.
Papa Murphy’s requires you to pay an advertising and development fee of 2% of weekly net sales.
