We are from Sunshine Coast, Queensland Brisbane, Australia. Our business is an original Drive In burgers and shake restaurant in South Lake Tahoe built in 1961.
Have you ever lived in the US before? If so, under what circumstances? If not, what aroused your interest in a move to the US?
Yes my sister and I lived in North Lake Tahoe in the early 90’s with our parents. They moved to the U.S. on an E2 visa. They imported a light aircraft to the States that my father and his brothers had built. My entire family has always longed to move back but life in Australia was always very busy and no one had the time to look into how to move back.
How did you decide to pursue and E2 Visa?
I was terribly unhappy at work and with our life in Australia, my fiancé and I would holiday in America once a year. It had always been my life long goal to move back to Tahoe. One day at work a few weeks after coming home from a holiday in Tahoe I decided I was going to succeed in my life goal and find way to live in America legally!! I studied all the ways I could do it and the E2 visa seemed the best idea.
What was your experience with the E2 Visa process? Did you ever consider giving up? What was your motivation to keep pressing on?
Yes I definitely considered giving up!! But not because the E2 visa process was too hard, just because finding a business in the area we wanted was very hard, along with the falling Australian dollar times got very difficult!! We went through a few business before we finally managed to buy one.
My motivation was I had made a promise to myself and my family that I would succeed and I never wanted to look back on my life and regret not having reached my goal. Also my family was so amazing and supportive of me and all the ups and downs we faced, we faced together.
What kind of relationship did/do you have with Chris (and his team)?
I had a great relationship with Jeremy who was my main contact. He was always so patient with me and always so professional when I would have a freak out. Towards the end things got very stressful but Jeremy was always there to calm me down. Jeremy was always very calm, courteous and professional and always contactable.
Everything went so smoothly just like Jeremy told us it would. We only spoke with Chris once during the beginning of the process, he was very knowledgable and professional and was very easy to talk to. He helped us work out what was the best option for us and how to go about the visa process.
I was really very lucky to find the Law Offices of Chris M. Ingram straight away and not waste time with other attorneys!
What was your immediate reaction upon being approved at the U.S embassy by the adjudicating officer? How did you celebrate?
My sister and I were so stunned that we actually asked if they were sure we were approved!! Only because we had been through such a trying stressful time in the last few days and we couldn’t really believe all our hard work and dedication had payed off, we were about to legally move to America, a 20 year dream was coming real.
We went to the closest bar and drank expensive champagne and it was all so surreal!!
What are you looking forward to most about your move to the US?
I am looking forward to having the life I have always dreamed about, being my own boss and just enjoying life in a beautiful part of the world. I am also looking forward to marring my fiancé and having a family.
What do you think you will miss the most when you leave your home abroad?
I will miss my friends and the beautiful warm weather and beaches of Australia but I will have my family with me and I’m replacing the beaches with the beautiful Tahoe lake and amazing skiing.
What advice would you give to any immigrant considering starting the E2 Visa application or who is already in the process?
My advice is definitely have all the cash money upfront before you start the process.
My mistake was having our house on the market and starting the process before it had sold.
We found a business we really liked before the house had sold so we missed out and it took months before another good business became available and months before our house sold.
Always have the money ready to make an offer!!!
