Tell me about where you are from and a little bit about what you do.
I’m a TV Producer who has been working in Manchester for the past 9 years.
How did you work your way up the ranks to reach your level and what were some of the challenges along the way.
I started working in TV in Australia, working my way up from being a runner – having always been freelance, so having to learn to reprogram my way of thinking – getting used to knowing about when I was going to work only at the last minute, work being cancelled due to shoots not going ahead or poor weather and me having to cancel social plans for work reasons – working my way up to being a Producer Director from the bottom.
Have you ever lived in the US before? If so, under what circumstances? If not, what aroused your interest in a move to the US?
I’d only ever visited the US for holidays but knew that it would offer lots of opportunities for my line of work and a lot better weather than Manchester!
How did you decide to pursue an EB1?
In my career I have been fortunate to win a BAFTA, International Emmy and National Royal Television Society award for a Children’s documentary idea I put forward and then went on to make with a Director for the BBC – this meant I could qualify for a once in a lifetime achievement visa for being an alien of extraordinary ability and then apply for my green card as a result.
What was your experience with the EB1 petition process?
I think if I’d have tried to apply for the EB1 without using Ingram’s it would have been really stressful – I’d looked at online forums and I just think as someone busy working full-time the level of paperwork and the way it needed to be set out would have become almost a full-time job for me. What worried me was if I’d done it off my own back and my petition had been unsuccessful – I’d read reviews stating this could create really big problems. When I received a copy of the binder the Ingram team had created in order for me to be awarded my EB1 I knew I’d made the right decision not to try and go it alone – the file was a thick with info all about me and my career and awards, my ID, pay documents etc – I would never have thought to present it that way or include the level of detail they had to make sure it was clear and showcased at a glance the evidence for my application.
What were some of the challenges you had to work on in the preparation of your case, for example evidence gathering?
You have to gather a lot of paperwork together – that’s what takes the time. I was lucky that I’m quite organized though but as we applied as a couple that was twice the amount of paperwork.
What kind of relationship did/do you have Chris and his team?
Chris is always on hand if you need him despite being the owner of the company – and his staff were always super friendly and excited for you as the application progressed.
What were you doing when you found out you were approved? What was your immediate reaction? How did/will you celebrate?
My husband met me after work and we went straight for a celebratory drink. We were in a bit of shock as we knew there was a lot we needed to organize and we needed to let everyone know we were officially going – so a mixture of feelings but really happy for such a great opportunity to be available to us.
What are you looking forward to most about moving to the US?
We’ve arrived and are currently enjoying holiday time in LA – which is great. We’ve been here less than a week and have already secured a new apartment near the marina which is exciting.
What will you miss the most about your home country?
We’ll miss being close to family and friends – that’s the hardest part but Manchester via Virgin does direct flights at 11 hours and so that’s not too bad and their economy seats and food is great – and they did a great job looking after our dog who was also on the flight. The world is a lot smaller place now with WhatsApp video calls so that helps a lot.
What advice would you give to any immigrant considering an EB1 or who is already in the process?
It can be a stressful process and if you’re working full time I’d say employ an immigration lawyer – I think for the money we paid it was absolutely worth it – to know we had someone we could direct our questions at and we knew was experienced in the application process and motivated to make it work out for us.
