EB1 and O1 Visa Success For Award Winning Sound Engineer
I was born in Canada and have been living in England for the past 15 years. As a sound monitor engineer, I work with bands during live shows to ensure they can properly hear each other on stage.
I have worked with bands like Foster the People, Nas, Passion Pit, The Hoosiers and Amy MacDonald. I am currently the sound monitor engineer for 30 Seconds to Mars, a band fronted by Oscar winner Jared Leto. I also toured the US with Foster the People on an O1 visa.
I started my career in sound engineering in college when I was a sound technician for a musical production. This sparked my interest in the technical side of live shows, and I enjoyed the work.

I have always been a musician, but as my career as progressed, I became increasingly frustrated with the sound engineers. I worked with because I couldn’t hear myself or the musicians around me. I decided I could do this better myself. As I started doing gigs, I developed a reputation for being a good monitor engineer and I started my career with the Hoosiers. Once I left that band, folk singer Amy MacDonald was in need of a sound monitor engineer, and sought me out. From there, I was able to further establish my reputation and because talented monitor engineers are rare, I continued to get gigs with top artists.
In 1993-94 I studied at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. While there, I studied drums, and initially started my career as a drummer. I later turned to the technical side of the business and became a sound monitor engineer. My wife, Julia, and I have been wanting to relocate to the US for a long time. I have been working on O1, O2 and P1 visas for American bands almost exclusively for the past five years. Though I have managed to work with top indie rock and pop bands, my first love is country music. Because most country music artists do not travel to the UK, this industry is almost impossible to break into unless you are in Nashville. So to start a new adventure and work with artists creating my favorite type of music, I have to be in the US..
The EB1 green card process is difficult. There are a lot of documents to gather and it can be quite stressful. I was on tour for much of the time that the petition was being prepared, and that did not always allow me access to the Internet or the ability to transmit documents as needed. One of the categories I worked up was Critical Role, and I had to request letters from those people I had worked with. Getting the promise of the letter is easy, but waiting for the letter to be returned with a signature and following up the people was quite frustrating at times. But we never considered giving up. This was something we wanted very badly, and though I questioned the need for so much stuff at time, I kept going because I knew that Chris and his team were putting together a great petition and that if I followed his instructions, I would be good.
My relationship with Chris and his team was fantastic. Whenever I had a question or a worry, they were right there to make sure I had nothing to worry about. I would like to mention Lindsey, who I worked closely with. Lindsey is the EB1 Green Card specialist and was incredible. Working with Attorney Chris M. Ingram, Lindsey talked me through the whole process and guided me in the right direction. I really appreciated that Lindsey very much a calming influence on me during what is a very stressful time and she was also very patient.
I was picked up our youngest child from school when the phone rang. Lindsey was calling to congratulate me. I was trying to stay calm as I was surrounded by tons of other parents. I was very happy, but also I was keen to know what I had to do next. Later on that evening, my wife and I opened a bottle of champagne that we were keeping for a special occasion. I think that was a pretty special occasion for sure.
I am anxious to explore my career opportunities in Nashville now that I will be able to work freely in the US. Additionally, the quality of life overall is better and my wife and children are looking forward to the new adventure. And of course – the weather.
We will be leaving behind friends and family, and they will be missed greatly. We will visit regularly, but are looking forward to making America our home.
Don’t give up on the process. It can be long and frustrating, especially when you are trying to gather evidence and still maintain your life, but Chris and his team know what they’re doing and will make sure that everything is done right.
