National Interest Waiver (NIW) Video Presentation – Professional License

Welcome to our National Interest Waiver (NIW) video presentation. In this section we’re going to continue our review of the seven NIW requirements. Ok – let’s get started.

.

.

.Professional License

3. A license to practice your profession or certification for your profession or occupation

Professional License: Here the wording of the criterion says ‘A license to practice your profession or certification for your profession or occupation’. Here, US Immigration is looking to see that you have some professional form of accreditation that has certified you as having competency at a certain level. Lawyers have to be admitted to a State Bar; doctors have to be admitted to some medical regulatory authority; and pharmacists similarly have to be admitted to and regulated by a governing body. Thus, most high-level professional occupations will have some governing body that regulates practice in one profession or another.

A professional license or certification must not be confused with mere membership to an establishment. A professional license or certification is one that means you cannot practice in the profession unless you have the required license to practice.  In contrast, a membership is often voluntary, meaning you can practice your profession lawfully without seeking membership to various associations that you may have an interest in joining.

Memberships are very important in their own right, as there are many prestigious memberships to which you cannot gain admission by simply by passing a particular exam. Membership is one of the seven categories available under the NIW program and will be discussed in that presentation.
