P1, P2 & P3 Visas For Athletes and Coaches

The P Visa  was created to provide opportunities for aliens primarily performing as a athletes to tour in the US.  The P Visa, like it’s big brother, the O1 visa was also created by the Immigration and Nationality Act of  1990.  In addition to covering athletes the P1 also covers performing and fine artists, however this latter group will be covered under the Entertainment section of this website.

P visa applicants do not have to have reached the pinnacle of their careers like O1 visa applicants, however P visa applicants do need to be nationally, or internationally known. This notoriety, if you will, can be evidence with various posters, flyers, brochures and programs of the events attended. The more documentation about the alien(s) and the significance of each event will go a very long way to establishing the alien as having met the application requirements.

There are three main classes of P Visa.

P-1 Visa: Members of Athletic Teams – Sport, Track and Field

P-2 Visa: Entertainers Who are Part of a Reciprocal International Exchange Program

P-3 Visa: Aliens Who are Coming to Perform in Programs that are Culturally Unique

Spouses and minor children of P visas holders will be issued a P-4 visa.

P1 Visas Covers a Wide Range of Sporting Events

Sponsorship Requirements: P visa applicants are required to be represented or sponsored by a US organization or agent who might be coordinating the event or tour.  The role of the sponsor is to provide a detailed account of the nature of the event or tour and confirming the suitability of the applicants accordingly. Evidence will of course need to be submitted about the event(s) itself, perhaps the event is an annual festival of some kind so there will be past publicity surrounding the event and it’s status within the community. At the same time we’ll be working with you to make sure that we  submit sufficient information about your particular team or individual track record. We’re very competitive too, as we want all of our cases to be approved first time, every time, so we really do work our clients very hard to make sure that they have the best possible case.

Requirements and Undertakings For P Visa Holders

P-1 thru P-3 Visa applicants must be coming to the US for a temporary purpose such as a to train, compete, tour and so forth. If the athletes can come for special training or coaching programs but if the want to settle in the US permanently then we’d discuss additional and alternative visa options. Aliens, while in the US on P-1  are required to retain a foreign home residence and sufficient evidence to show that they are maintaining their home ties.

Supporting Members

Many larger and well know Athletic teams and indivisuals may have supporting technicians consisting of  personal trainers, coaches, handlers, managers, and so forth to enabling the P1 alien to perform.  These supporting members can also obtain P -1B visas to enable them to travel.
